About the Event

SEA is excited to offer a university-level Chinese Art History course taught by Julie Chun, Adjunct Professor of Art History, where we will explore the material culture from the Neolithic Era to the present times through monthly thematic studies. These one-hour lectures, followed by discussions will provide an over-arching introduction and an immense insight not merely about Chinese art but also its culture and history.

For our first session, we will examine one of the oldest artifacts in China’s ancient civilization. Jade, before it was prized as precious jewelry of the Orient, was solely relegated for funerary purposes.  Julie Chun will discuss the difference between jade and jadite and their role as burial objects to reveal the many surprising and intriguing questions that remain shrouded in mystery regarding this precious gem that continues to baffle gemologists, historians, and art experts.
